What the Democrats must do to win in the south.

Here is the end result that was turned in.

How the Democratic Party can win the south

I have determined that in order for the Democrats to win the south, the average level of education among the various Southern states must be raised to a higher level.

Most of the south is uneducated. In fact, the south has the highest illiteracy rate in the country. The southern culture is such that their lack of education is celebrated. There are places within the south that those with college education are considered to be snobbish and elitist. This must be changed in order to permit widespread higher education within the south, clearing the way for a Democratic Party victory. Before this can happen, however, something must be done to change the belief that the educated are elitists. It might help to hold frequent seminars, lectures, perhaps even shows to teach people about the advantages of higher education, and where this higher level of education can be achieved.

There is a lot of research to show that most college graduates vote Democrat (see below chart). The south has the lowest percentage of college graduates in the nation. In addition, the Republican Party has most of the devout Christians in America. Many of them are unwilling to accept change, and there are some more extreme members of the Republican Party members who might even say that too much change is sinful. In addition, the majority of the Republican Party members are older than the Democratic average age. Many elderly people have their minds hard set on their beliefs, and are unwilling to change their minds once it is made up. It is because of this that the Republican Party is very inflexible, and this stubbornness appeals to many southerners. It is also possible that the Democrats may have to wait until the average age of the Southern states is reduced for this reason.

The members of the Republican Party are also, on average, much older than members of the Democratic Party. This means that the Republican Party grew up in a different era, both culturally, politically, and technologically. This means that in theory, the Democratic Party is more up to date on most political issues, and knows how to use technology better. However, the south is much less technologically advanced then other parts of the nation. This would also be remedied by college education. So in addition to moving the south closer to a Democratic area of the nation, raising the average level of education of the Southern states could also improve the local economies, and raise the technological levels of the area.

The above chart shows that most members of the Republican Party are more “traditional” in their beliefs. The vast majority of them believe that the President should believe in God, and go to church weekly themselves. The Republican Party also has a higher percentage also have a much higher percentage of gun owners. This is influenced by the fact that many Republicans are reluctant to allow any change at all to the “social contract” that is composed of a combination of civil rights, common law, and the general way things are done, and discouraging civilian gun ownership would be a relatively major change. Fewer Republicans are members of unions of any sort, and as stated, most of the younger population is Democratic.

In conclusion, most college graduates vote Democrat. The south, however, has a low percentage of college graduates. Thus, in order to win the South, the Democratic Party must improve the general level of education of the Southern states.

I pretty much redid the paper. The original can be found at the bottom of this post, and is crossed through. You can easily see the huge changes.

I am writing a political science paper, on how the Democrats can win the Southern vote, because the south ALWAYS votes republican.

I have decided that in order for the Democrats to win the south, they must convince people to not vote until they actually read and understand the issues being voted on.

My research shows that the reason that the black vote is almost always democratic is that the democrats usually put in welfare and other such programs, which help them. My research also shows that this assistance is needed because most of the south is economically the same as it has been for a long time, and that this fact is highly unlikely to change any time soon. Part of the cause of this is that Tennessee, for example, has about 30 times the number of counties it needs. There are counties with only 12 or 13 thousand people, that are paying for a police force big enough for 40 or 45 thousand people. Several of these smaller counties are also paying for 3 or more high schools, when one high school could easily server 3 or 4 of these small counties. This huge overspending results in overtaxing, and holding people where they are.

And yet, the republicans still hold the south. This is because the white vote is still a majority, and has been republican ever since LBJ signed the Civil Rights bill. Ever since this, the majority of the white population of the south has voted republican. For a while, they voted republican because it was the Democrats that ended segregation, and many at the time did not like this. Now, they still vote republican. I believe, however, that no more do they vote republican because of racism. I believe they now vote republican because many southerners are taught to vote the way their parents did, regardless of party issues or stances.

In conclusion, it is my belief that if people were to educate themselves on the matters at hand rather then blindly vote to their party, the democratic party would likely win.

Please, by all means, comment on this. Note that this is a rough draft for a political science opinion paper, and as such, all comments made will affect the final paper.

EDIT:Fixed minor grammar issues, put in a few clarifying sentences.

One Response to “What the Democrats must do to win in the south.”

  1. Uncle S Says:

That “always” dates back to the 1960’s, when Republicans decided to use race as an issue to win over white voters. You’ll find many older Republicans who were once democrats but switched sometime between the early 60’s and the early 70’s. Before that to,e, white southern racists found their home in the Democratic party. After that time, they found their home in the Republican party. It was a nasty, cynical political ploy, and it worked.
